🧠 To Be Happier And Healthier, Focus On This

Friends,

Thousands of years ago, Aristotle said there was only one point in living: to attain eudaemonia. That’s a fancy word for “happiness” or “contentment.” Since then, however, there’s been no shortage of experts telling us what will get us to that state.

Believe it or not, science now has a fairly definitive answer. It comes from a 75+ year experiment started at Harvard during the Great Depression. In the experiment, researchers followed cohorts of both Stanford grads as well as inner-city Boston men.

According to the study’s leader:

The clearest message we get from this 75 year study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period. Social connections are really good for us; and loneliness kills. People who are more socially connected to family, to friends, to community are happier; they are physically healthier; and they live longer than people who are less socially connected.”

Satisfaction with relationships was a better predictor of how people would age more than cholesterol, socioeconomic conditions, or genetics.

We know that many of you come to us for insights on finance and investing. There’s nothing wrong with that. But we need to remember that this is just a means to an end. The whole point of financial freedom is using that time that’s freed up to strengthen our relationships.

There’s nothing more important to a long-term mindset.

One Piece of Timeless Content:

The Warren Buffett Way by Robert Hagstrom is a classic investing book. If you’ve never read it, check out this 8-page summary. It contains a quick overview of how Buffett approaches investing. I love point #1 the most: “Never follow the day to day fluctuations of the stock market.”

One Twitter Thread:

10-K Diver’s threads are epic. They start with a suggestion to “get a cup of coffee” because the threads are so rich with content, they take time to read.

One of my favorites is his explanation of “path dependence”, which is a critical concept that every investor should know.
